Our Engagement Story

Jennifer and I were apart from each other pretty much all of 2003. From January to August, Jennifer was up in Hartford, CT working for Pratt & Whitney Aircraft Engines and I was working for Braun Intertec in Minneapolis, MN from June to December. We, Jennifer especially, were familiar with flying that year.

Later in the year, I knew I wanted to propose to Jennifer and she was expecting/wanting it. I decided to pick a very romantic holiday to “pop the question” since I was visiting her in Rolla for the weekend. So we got engaged on October 31, 2003. Yes, it was Halloween!

Jennifer picked me up St. Louis airport on Thursday and she had a lab on Friday after lunch when I planned to get ready to ask her, but just a few minutes later she said she was done & I wasn’t ready! I changed it a little so she didn’t have to wait so long.

I started the process with a scavenger hunt to find me. I changed it by having her start from the building she was at so I put a note with the first clue. It was to go where we first met (the Baptist Student Union). The next note led her to her old room where we would hang out, then where I we first prayed together, we studied (library 3rd floor), our old dorm, her sorority, my apartment, then the park we would hang out a lot. I probably missed a couple spots that I had her go.

At the park, I came up behind her and blindfolded her. Then I led her on a trust walk, where she had to follow my lead while being blindfolded. I lead her a long way to where I asked her out two year before. (Side note: when I asked her out, it was in during Freshmen week late at night when we decided to go for a walk in the rain) I was trying to make it a surprise where we were at, but she guessed it by the sound of an ATM! Well, I got on one knee, removed the blindfold, and asked if she would marry me. She said yes!

We were very happy and visited my mom that weekend, I believe. These pictures are from my roommate using my camera. It was his first time using a digital camera so he wasn’t used to it (that is why it is blurring). My other roommate had a better angle and a tripod with his camera, but forgot his batteries that he was charging so they wouldn’t go dead while taking pictures of us. Jennifer didn’t know they watched us getting engaged!

Well that is the story of how we got engaged!

P.S.-That building we are next to is now torn down. Now where we got engaged is in the middle of a grass lawn.

Dating

We met nine years ago the day before our college classes began our freshmen year. We had to be there a week early for freshmen week and on Sunday, the Baptist Student Union had an open house. When I first saw her, I really liked her. She definitely caught my eye. I, on the other hand, did not catch hers! If you know me, you know I am shy. But if you knew me in high school, I was very shy. Well, I liked her so much that I had the courage to go up and talk to her. We talked and later went our separate ways not to see each other again for two months. She didn’t remember me that much for UMR is 80% guys and 20% girls so there are a lot of guys for her to choose from. I couldn’t stop thinking about her.

When I saw her again was for trip up to St Louis to go to a Third Day concert. I was thrilled to see her, however I wasn't thrilled to find out she was dating someone. Even more so, someone I had classes with and didn't care for the guy. Thankfully, their relationship ended soon there after.

Well, we got to know each other a little bit as the semester went on with her roommate and my friend both being Mormon that got us to see each other more. We hung out more until before Christmas break I wanted to ask her out, but because of her past relationship didn’t want to date. Well, we didn’t officially start dating until August 2001, but we pretty much started dating in February 2001 when I gave her a Valentines Day gift. Also, I had a bad day that Valentine’s Day since I had three tests and career fair so I asked her for dinner and told her if I didn’t get A’s on all tests I would pay for her dinner & if I did she paid for her dinner. I paid. I’ll let you guess if I got A’s on the tests.

We dated for two years before getting engaged but it wasn’t easy for all of 2003 we were in different states and states and saw each other about 8-10 times that year. In 2002, I was a summer missionary so we didn’t get to see each other or talk hardly at all. Too bad cell phones were common then.

I’ll write about our engagement next entry.

Five Years Down, Many Years to Go!

Jennifer and I got married five years ago today. We got married in Macon, MO at First Baptist Church. I have been asked to share our engagement story, but I figured I would start at the beginning. I am so glad she is my wife and look forward to growing old with her, raising kids with her and going through life with her by my side. I am excited about the future for us, especially with a kid on the way! :-)

I am going to break up the blog entries into:
-Dating
-Engagement & Wedding
-Maybe later leading up to now.

Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God Almighty

Chapter 1: Stop Praying

I will try to write about my journey through the book, but I won't write too much now for I have to get ready for W2P that our church has tonight (Worship, Prayer, Potluck). I did have some things written, but lost it. :-(

What I got out of this chapter was the awe of God. I posted a video last post that he encourages the reader to watch to see how big the universe is and what God created. I am selfish and think too often that God is there for me not that I was created for God. I wonder what God will do for me or plan for me and how He will help me out. I want to have the control, but God is the creator, He is the only one that is Holy, set apart, worthy of honor and praise and glory. Not my life. I'm not God. The story is not about me, but God. I have a part in the story, but isn't about me.

This morning at church, Don Pucik was guest preaching for Mike is out on vacation in Destin, FL. At the end, he asked: Is God's mission...my mission? He was talking about we are on mission wherever we are and to follow God's mission, not ours. Too often do I make a decision and ask God to bless it rather than for seeking God's will in it and obey. He is the one in control. He made the stars. He made me. He knows me better than I know myself.

At the end of the chapter, Chan refers to Revelation 4 when John gets to see the throne of God in heaven. When there he hears the angels sing day and night:
"Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord God, the Almighty,
Who was and who is and who is to come"
and the 24 elders bow down to say
"Worthy are You, our Lord and our God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for You created all things, and because of
Your will they existed and were created." (Rev 4:8,11)

This is a beautiful worship song that I love hearing Katy Sears sing at church that comes from Rev. 4:

Crazy Love

I have heard from several friends at church, through Stuff Christians Like blog, and a friend from college about the book Crazy Love by Francis Chan. I figured I better check it out since I have heard such great things about it.

I have listened to the book because I heard about it being for free in July at https://christianaudio.com/free (so get it this week), but you don't get as much just hearing it. Even though it is nice being Francis reading it so you hear his mannerisms while reading it.

I got the book this week and both Jennifer and I have starting reading it. Kind of great that with listening to it and now reading it, I hear Francis' voice when reading it and get more out of it now.

I encourage you to check it out. I am hopefully going to blog of what I get out of it.

The Awe Factor of God video by Francis Chan:

Joy through Sorrow

Wade, our youth pastor, has started a series on the Fruit of the Spirit. Last night we started on Joy. Joy is not happiness. We can have joy through our sorrow. We won't be happy, but we have joy and rejoice for God is there and has a plan for our lives. He is in control and loves us.

Jennifer and I are big fans of FamilyLife. We listen everyday to the podcast of FamilyLife Today. We went through their premarital material (which I didn't know it was theirs, but it was very good) and have gone to a Weekend to Remember. We love the honesty and authenticity that Dennis Rainey and Bob Lepine have and their love for Christ.

This week they are broadcasting the story of Might Molly Muntz. She is Dennis Rainey's granddaughter that was born June 13, 2008 and died June 19, 2008. All week they are going through the pain and sorrow of the story of her life, but through it, knowing God was there and glorifying Him. I recommend you listen to her story. Click here for the FamilyLife Page.

Jennifer found out Molly's death before it was told on air from Rebecca Muntz's blog. Also from it, we have found out that she was expecting a baby (Micah) in October, but miscarried so they went through the pain over again. Go to her blog for a birthday poem to Molly: What's Cooking?

We pray that our baby is healthy and everything goes well. But no matter what happens, we pray that we will glorify God and praise him through any sorrow we go through in life.

Grace Point's Growth

Well I have only one week to go until my Professional Engineer exam and then I can relax on the beach at Gulf Shores! WooHoo!! So keep me in your prayers that I study well, rest well, and do well on the test so I can be one and done!

This past week was Easter so like usual, it was the highest attendance at church. At Grace Point, we had 1058 people at church which is the first time we have had over 1000 people at church. That is unbelievable that we are getting this big. We starting going to Grace Point in January 2005. When we went the average attendance was 180 people. Now it is about 830 people. Crazy! We have averaged a growth of about 45% each year. If this keeps up, we will average 1,200 around Easter 2010, and 1,750 for Easter 2011.

In the four years we have been going to GPC, we met in the cafeteria of Bentonville High School, then built our building, then went to two services, and now have three services. The next big step for GPC is probably planting a church. When we first starting going was when they had the building campaign. The phrase used during it was "we are a church of 200, building for a church of 500." Nope, we are now around 1,000.

It wouldn't mean much though if it was just that we are going in numbers, but we have a great group of people at our church. We have struggles, but we are willing to share in those struggles. We are all on a journey together which makes the church great. We have been so blessed by being a part of Grace Point.

Now off to study! I'm looking forward to being back involved again with the youth in two weeks!

Two Weeks to Go!!!

14 days from now, I will be done with the PE exam (hopefully with a successful test!) and be heading down to the Gulf of Mexico on vacation. I can't believe that it is only 14 days away! Tomorrow I will be taking a practice exam so I will be at work for 8 hours taking it. Sunday, I plan on going over it and seeing how I did and what I did wrong and why. After that I will have ten days left of studying. Hopefully, I will be able to crank it up a degree in studying. I have been having several distractions recently, mainly the car getting a transmission. I have the mixed emotion of looking forward to getting it over with and wishing it was farther away so I had more time to study.

We are planning on going on vacation after the test so Jennifer and I can spend some time together and I can let my brain have a break. It will be nice to sit by the beach and relax. We still need to figure where we are going, but we are getting an idea.

Please be praying for me that I will study hard the next two weeks and that I will do well on the exam and pass it the first time around. Probably the next time I'll write is on vacation!

Here is a picture my coworker took last Friday afternoon (that's my office at work):

So now you know where to find me the next 12 days!

The Easy Christian Life?

Once you become a Christian, your life is supposed to easy and peachy and everything goes by the plan.  Life becomes like Leave it Beaver.  Nothing really goes wrong.  All is right in the world and their is no more pain . . .  Right?

Not exactly.  Life is tough.

Last Sunday, in both Planet Kids and "big church" we talked about service.  We need to go the extra mile and help people out.  We need to breathe in and out.  While this was the theme, it was apparent last Sunday ways to serve or at least pray for people.  All last Sunday, Jennifer found out some friends lost a baby that lived to be 60 days old, another couple is having financial struggles, another friend that had a mental breakdown. Then Jennifer served me with being sick from Sat to Tuesday.

Fast forward to today, Planet Kids was on praying to God with your frustrations and your hurts.  We only had two kids (compared with 15 from last week) and got to talk about God lets us go through hard times to make us stronger and to teach us patience and to trust in Him.  This hits us right now.  We want a baby.  Jennifer is really, really struggling with not being pregnant.  We know it will happen in God's time and God's way, but it is still hard.  Please be praying for us, especially Jennifer.  I want to have a child, but I don't understand Jennifer's deep desire to have a child.  Thanks for your prayers.

Here is a video of Matt Redman's great song that helps remind that God never lets us go and always is with us.

ONE and Two Monthes

ONE weekend was a great weekend.  I loved hanging out with the 9th grade boys all weekend.  One of my favorite things was praying over Jason that goes to GPC and just started an Auto Body shop by the high school.  I am still trying to recover from ONE.

Tomorrow is going to be strange for me for I am not going to be at youth.  I have been helping out at youth for the past three and half years at Grace Point and now taking a small break from it.  I am taking the PE exam in 2 months from today (April 24) in Little Rock and need to do some heavy studying for it.  I am not doing much of anything during the week except Men's Frat on Wed. mornings.  Sundays I am still going to teach 5th graders and church and BodyLife group.  It is going to be strange not being there at youth, but Brooks is going to fill in for me while I am out for the next two months.

This will also give me time to kind of regroup too.  I love my group of 9th and 10th grade boys and pray that they will be devoted followers of Christ in their lives, not just in high school.  So this time off can maybe help me think of ways I can be a better minister to them as their small group leader.

Please pray for me these next two months that I am diligent in studying, I don't stress out, and that I do well and pass the exam.

Maybe not quite 25 random things...

It seems like everyone on Facebook is doing a 25 Random Things.  I thought it was pretty stupid, but I have enjoyed reading people's random things.  Jennifer put on hers that because she did one that I would do one and mine would be better.  Well, I am more or less doing one and mine won't be better.  I really liked her thoughts.  I have been meaning to write a blog entry anyways that had some random thoughts so I am doing that instead of a list of 25 things.

On Wednesday, Jerad was preaching to the youth and the series has been on redefining normal, which is the theme for our ONE Weekend coming up this weekend.  Well, he was talking about spiritual disciplines and how we need to have those for growth and not just going from event to event. I was rather harsh on my self and my group about this.

I posed the question: How have you grown in your spiritual walk in the past year since last ONE weekend?

I confessed that it seems that I haven't grown in my spiritual walk with Christ over the past year and as a group (9th & 10th grade boys) we haven't.

But I think I was wrong.  I know I was wrong.  We have grown.  I have grown.

It might to be a burning bush moment or a transfiguration moment.  It has been more of a wondering through the desert, but I, and the boys, have grown over the past year.  It might have taken 50 miles of walking to get one mile closer, but that means you are still closer.

Nothing happens on accident.  There is a purpose and a plan that God has.  Sometimes it sure doesn't feel like it or think that my way is better than God's way, but He is in control.

I am not God.  Hard to believe, huh?  But I lose sight of how God has led me and shown his love to me.  It is very true of spiritual disciplines (prayer, fasting, meditation, reading, etc.) sometimes seem like a chore and get no reward.  It seems sometimes I go to church on Sunday or youth on Wednesday and I am not into it or get nothing out of it. But I do.  Even if I don't realize it, I get a nugget of truth.  It is kind of like the story of a guy saying that he doesn't remember every meal that his wife has cooked for him, but it nourished him all the same and in the same way I might not remember or learn each time going to church, but it still gives nourishment.

Big things that have happened in my life over the past year:
  • We had to put our lab to sleep because she attacked our neighbor dogs.  That was the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life and hope that circumstance never happens again.  But through it, God has given us peace that we did the right thing & helped us through it.
  • Jennifer went to Haiti which was incredible and has given Jennifer and love for orphans and those in need.
  • We helped out with Financial Peace University at church and seeing couples communicate better and be happier because they agreed on money.  It has helped us out a great deal.
  • I went to Falls Creek with the Surge kids and that was awesome seeing some of the kids transformed.  I have never seen a group go so much from fighting to being a close knit group.
  • I started help teach 5th graders in Planet Kids which has been pretty neat.  I learn a great deal about God from just preparing the lesson and them asking questions about God.
  • We are able to pay off our second mortgage so our only debt is our first mortgage which is so relieving that we don't have to worry that much about the economy.  If you don't have debt, then what the economy does just doesn't matter too much to you.
  • Jennifer's company was bought out and mine has been having trouble and had to have layoffs in January. It was hard to see some of my favorite coworkers get laid off.  I pray that they will find jobs quickly.
  • Men's Frat in the fall was very good and helped a lot along with the ManUP weekend.  Especially with being a better husband to Jennifer and live in an understanding way.
  • My small group has been meeting on Mondays going through Peppermint-Filled Pinatas.  Great book on loving others that aren't like you.  The way we show Christ to others is to love them, not to make them change.  We need to enter their world and love God and love them.
  • A cat adopted us in the beginning of December.  She is a great addition to our family.  She is affectionate and lazy.  A great combo for a cat!
  • Being part of a great BodyLife Group at Grace Point.  Grace Point has been such a blessing for Jennifer and I over the past 4 years and the past several months we have been part of the Toto BLG.  I love the group and Jennifer and I have become really good friends with Phillip and Sarah and their kids.
There have been other things, but that is the main ones I can think of right now.

So back to the question:
How have you grown in your spiritual walk in the past year since last ONE weekend?

I have grown in becoming a better husband, in loving others, seeing that God loves us and has amazing grace for us.  He is our comfort and provider.  He wants us to love all of His children, not just the ones that look like us, talk like us and believe like us but the homosexual, the Hindu, the "Christian", black people, Hispanics, everyone as God's creation.  Everyone is different, but God loves us all the same.

I have grown over the past year.  God has been leading me on the spiritual journey all of my life and I have joined him on it for almost ten years (April 1999).  God has lead me through so much over the past ten years and I am looking forward to what is in store . . .

So that is my answer and my random thoughts over the past 5 days.  What about you?  How have you grown in the last year?

Life is a Journey, Enjoy the Ride!

ONE Weekend this week!!

ONE Weekend is this Wed, Friday-Sunday at GPC for the youth.  This is the third year of it and I have really enjoyed being a part of it each year.  I am looking forward to the fact that I get to be a support family for the Toto's who is hosting for the 9th grade boys.  I get to be with my boys that I help lead on Wed.  nights.  It will be good for I am stepping away from youth for a couple months while I prepare for the PE exam which is in less than 10 weeks!

Here is the video from last year's ONE weekend:

I thought this clip from The Daily Show was really funny!  Thanks Scott for posting it!

Presidental Inaugeration at 10:30 am

You can watch the inaugeration online at hulu.com. Here is it embeded:

I plan on recording it and watching it in the evening for I don't want to take 1.5 hours out of my workday to watch it live.  I look forward to watching it for it is a part of history even though I don't agree with who it is. Obama will be my president.  We all need to pray for him in his decisions and in his safety.

99 Days to Go

Yesterday marked that there is only 100 days to go until I take the eight hour exam to determine if I become a Professional Engineer. I have a lot of studying to do between now and then, but hopefully I will do well. I have already taken a review class at the U of A and have studied 4 hours and hope to do a couple more today. In all I will need to study somewhere between 200 and 300 hours for the exam. You can do the math to figure out how much that is per day!

Also, yesterday was 30 days until we pay off our second mortgage which we are thankful for and then we are going to try to make our savings account a lot bigger for my company (like other companies that rely on construction) isn't doing that well.

In addition, today it is 36 days until ONE weekend which is a pretty awesome weekend retreat for the youth at Grace Point.

So that is some countdowns for some things that are coming up in the future of my life. Any countdowns going on in your life?

1612 Days and Counting

This is a special comment from Jenn... I cannot resist!

Michael and I have been married for 1612 days now...it has gone by so fast!  Every day has gotten better, except when we get on each others nerves.  And as time flies by, yes, we do get on each other's nerves!  But, life overall is wonderful!  I wouldn't trade Mike for any other man...except for when he goes for days without shaving (Stefanie, just wait, after a while, Scott will go scruffy)!  And going to see family is another issue!  As time goes on, I see our different families' faults.  I can stand certain family members more, by the grace of God and after 7 years of being together.  But certain family members, even Michael can't stand!  Oh, and last year, I finally made him mad by wrecking the car (this man hardly gets mad).

Married life... its an adventure!  Mike is the handsomest man, and after being married to him for the last 4.5 years, I find that I still have much more of his soul to discover.  We never run out of things to talk about.  Its amazing when we have our many heart-to-heart conversations and we "dream" (that is a loose term) about the future.

And I can't wait to have his babies...his little redheads are going to be so cute!  But we still have to practice first!  Practice makes perfect!

This is Mike's onry wife signing out,
